The new concept was built using the latest trends in interior architecture and design, as well as the evolution of consumer expectations since the banner's last update five years ago. At the same time, the store remains focused on low prices. The new store concept is embedded in the needs of the city-based shopper, and it illustrates a significant move away from the standard store format that is typically found in suburban and rural locations.

We visited four of Auchan’s new store concept – Audastore. The name comes from the French ‘Audace’ that means bold, courageous, original. The new store concept shows that through its design, colour, assortment, services and staff uniforms.

The Perekrestok dark store is one of three types of fulfilment solutions that deliver in Moscow and the wider region. The other two types of online fulfilment units are a regular store and a hybrid one. In comparison to the other two fulfilment formats, the dark store has the advantage of greater picking efficiency and speed. We visited the store to observe its operational effeciency.

The X5 lab store is located just inside Moscow’s second ring. It shares the space with a Pyaterochka store where retail solutions are tested and their impact on shoppers’ experience is assessed. The concept store tests innovative retail solutions to assess their impact on sales and costs. These are conducted before deciding on whether to roll them out to the wider X5 network. We visited the store to observe the solutions being tested.

We visited four of the latest concepts of Magnit stores. Two post office shop-in-shops, a new convenience concept and a pharmacy shop-in-shop. The difference in the format and in the operational set up illustrates the retailer’s strategic flexibility to boost shopper traffic and basket spend.

We visited a Perekrestok store in Moscow to observe and highlight some of the features that differentiate the banner from its competitors within the Russian market, and how the store is fitted to meet regional needs of Moscow consumers.

We visited two of Lenta’s hypermarkets in Moscow. One of the stores was refurbished in 2017 and the other opened toward the end of the year. We highlight the initiatives that Lenta installed in both stores off the back of its strategy for 2017, and highlight aspects of the 2018 planned strategy.
