Aldi in Australia has committed to achieving zero waste to landfill, with a phased approach to achieving its target.
Food waste will be the top priority
The discounter in Australia has always taken a strong stance towards sustainability and last year announced that 100% of its operations would be powered by sustainable energy by the end of 2021. It will now focus on improving how it deals with waste through focusing on improved waste segmentation in-store, doubling food donations and identifying recycling opportunities within its supply chain. Food waste will be a top priority, with Aldi commiting to zero food waste to landfill by 2023.
Opportunities across the supply chain
Some of the initiatives that Aldi will look to implement will include expanding its food rescue programme so that more product is used to feed animals and more edible food is donated to charities. Aldi has also launch 'Market Buy' seasonal fruit and veg with imperfections, helping reduce waste from produce that is perfectly edible. Old store uniforms will be recycled for clothing or upholstery, in-store recycling services are being introduced for batteries, coffee capsules and soft plastics, while pallets will be chipped and resold as garden mulch as part of its Special Buys offers.

Woolworths has committed to zero food waste to landfill by 2025 as part of its sustainability plan, while Coles has a long term ambition for zero waste as part of its Together to Zero sustainability plan. These initiatives from all retailers will increasingly influence their decisions and suppliers who can support them on their journey will also be well placed.

Our commitment will see the business reduce the amount of waste created and reuse or recycle materials to cease unnecessary waste from being sent to landfill.
