Following initiatives in its home market across several channels and as its operations in Poland expand its Outlet concept, we round up news from the retailer.

Carrefour aiming to move 40 stores to franchisees in 2021

France-based trade publication LSA has reported that Carrefour is looking to move about 40 stores to rental management in 2021. The 40 stores are made up of about 30 supermarkets and 10 hypermarkets, if transferred, would, in future, be managed by a third party. If completed, the number of stores transferred to franchisees would continue a process the retailer began recently and underline how it could be part of an-going programme, rather than a one-off.

Carrefour to rebrand 15 Bio c’Bon stores to Carrefour City…

Carrefour is to rebrand 15 of the 107 Bio c’Bon stores it acquired to the Carrefour City banner from 1 May. Meanwhile, the company said it would also be converting around 30 stores under the Carrefour Bio brand will be transferred to the Bio c’Bon banner. The rebranding of the Carrefour Bio stores to Bio c’Bon, which was considered but not confirmed in January 2021, will help the retailer build a larger presence for the latter brand more quickly, which should help improve operational efficiencies and buying more widely.

…As it continues Supeco expansion

Separately the retailer has opened its eighth Supeco in its home market, as it looks to reach its target of opening 30 in 2021, including some under franchise. The store, Carrefour’s first in France outside the Hauts-de-France region, in line with its others under the banner, stocks about 2,500 SKUs, of which 200 are sold in bulk, from a selling area of about 1,000 sq. m. To enable it to compete the Supeco stores carry an offer to meet shoppers’ big shop or weekly needs, including meat, fresh products, and some non-food products.

Carrefour Poland expands Outlet in-store concept…

Following its launch and trial in three stores in Autumn 2020, Carrefour Poland is expanding its Outlet store-in-store zones, which provides non-food products at competitive prices. Following a positive shopper reception, the zones have been added to three hypermarkets across two cities, Warsaw and Lódz. The zones stock home furnishing, decorative, sports, toys, and electronics and household appliances, with prices starting at PLN1.99 (US$0.50). To underline the value on offer and help shoppers navigate the areas easily Carrefour has grouped products by price: up to PLN5 (US$1.28), up to PLN10 (US$2.56), and up to PLN15 (US$3.84).

…As its operations in Brazil launch its own unstaffed stores

Carrefour Brazil has opened two unstaffed stores in Sao Paulo as it looks to investigate the opportunities provided by the concept. The retailer’s existing stores are in a residential condominium in São Bernardo do Campo and a coworking space in the Brooklin neighbourhood. To access the store, shoppers use their Meu Carrefour app, which the retailer has said will help with safety and reduce chances of theft. This will be enhanced by the stores’ placement, which will usually be in controlled environments, such as commercial buildings and closed condominiums.
