Leclerc’s president, Michel Edouard Leclerc, has discussed how the retailer’s online operations generated the sales it was forecast to in 2024 in 2020, following the impact of COVID-19 and shoppers’ changing buying behaviours.
Drives enjoyed sales growth of 42% in 2020…
Leclerc said the retailer’s Drives saw sales growth of 42% in 2020, which helped to offset the challenges faced by its large hypermarkets, especially those in shopping centres, which were affected by lockdown restrictions. He also noted the innovation implemented by its store owners across all digital channels, including Drives, Pedestrian Drives, home delivery and click & collect.
…And support further expansion in 2021
He said during the first lockdown period, Leclerc added a million new shoppers for its Drives. Growing shopper interest will underpin the expansion of its Pedestrian Drive network and see it open ‘hundreds of pedestrian relay points in cities’. These will provide the same range and prices as offered by Leclerc through its hypermarkets.
To see how the retailer has evolved its Pedestrian Drive offer, read our article about the concept from Leclerc hypermarket owner Thomas Pocher, who created the very first Leclerc pedestrian drive in France in 2016.
