How three retailers are investing in their sustainability initiatives

Lidl Italia expanded its Myfood partnership to implement the scheme in more stores in new locations. Meanwhile, Coop Sweden revealed new targets to reduce its food waste. Separately, Coop Switzerland plans to use hydrogen powered lorries in its supply chain.

Lidl Italia expands coverage for Myfoody app

Lidl Italia first partnered with Myfoody in September 2019, which launched in 55 stores in Bologna, Milan, and Turin. The retailer has since expanded the app’s coverage to a total of 120 stores. The expansion has seen its coverage to Rome, Florence, Genoa, and Palermo.

The Myfood app enables Lidl Italia to sell products close to their sell by dates at a 30% discount. Future developments will focus on building shopper awareness of food waste and encouraging them to use the service, while also offering practical advice for how to implement a sustainable lifestyle.

Coop Sweden sets new food waste reduction target

Coop Sweden has introduced a new food waste reduction target. It is aiming for food waste will amount to less than 1% of its sales across all its operations by 2025. Coop Sweden claims consumers voted food waste as a key priority for the industry. This has encouraged it to be one of the first to join the national agreement for food waste reduction.

Coop Sweden’s head of quality and sustainability, Charlotta Szczepanowski, stated; ‘the retailer is setting a tough goal for our entire business, while strengthening our work to help members and consumers reduce their food waste’. Separately she noted the national agreement allows ‘new opportunities to counteract food waste throughout the food chain through collaboration with different organisations’.

Coop Switzerland introduces hydrogen powered lorries

Coop Switzerland is to add seven hydrogen powered lorries to its fleet by the end of 2020. The first truck has been launched in collaboration with H2 Energy and Hyundai and is, according to the companies, one of the first fuel cell electric trucks that operates on hydrogen.

The joint venture aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 80 tonnes per year, through the introduction of hydrogen powered lorries. Furthermore, Coop Switzerland plans to open hydrogen refilling stations to encourage the use of hydrogen powered vehicles and aims to operate hydrogen refilling stations throughout Switzerland by 2023.
