Latin America retail outlook 2020

Oliver Butterworth

We review the five key trends set to shape the Latin American grocery market over the next 12 months and beyond;

  • Major retailers, including Grupo Éxito in Colombia and Carrefour in Brazil are optimising their store portfolios to better coexist or to compete with discounters
  • Healthy and organic products are becoming more desirable in Brazil. In response, leading retailers such as Carrefour and GPA are expanding their health-focused and organic private labels
  • Proximity is rapidly expanding in Peru and Colombia. Oxxo and Tambo+ plan to open hundreds of convenience stores in Peru over the next three years, while in Colombia, the discount channel continues to see exponential growth, led by three key players D1, Ara and Justo & Bueno
  • We are starting to see more advanced technology being implemented in hypermarkets. Walmart and Grupo Éxito are among those developing technologies aimed at simplifying and enhancing the shopping experience
  • Last mile delivery solutions will continue evolving as customers seek greater convenience and immediacy. We expect to see more partnerships and acquisitions of third-party delivery businesses
