Amazon Salon is Amazon’s first hairdressing concept and will trial the latest industry technology, including augmented reality (AR) hair consultations and ‘point-and-learn’ technology.

Amazon’s first hairdressing concept

The 1,500 sq ft salon is opening in London’s Spitalfields and follows the launch of Amazon Professional Beauty Store on Amazon Salon will initially be available to Amazon employees only but will open to the public in the coming weeks. The salon is designed to be an experiential venue, showcasing new products and technology. Amazon confirmed there are no current plans to open any other Amazon Salon locations.

Use of tech

The most interesting feature of Amazon Salon is its use of innovative technology. Starting with AR technology, customers can experiment with different virtual hair colours in a dedicated creative area. Amazon’s Fire tablets will also be available at each styling station for customers’ entertainment.

Amazon will also test point-and-learn technology for the first time. As customers point at a product they are interested in on a display shelf, the relevant information, including brand videos and educational content, will appear on a display screen. They can then order these products by scanning a QR code on the shelf to visit the product detail page on, with delivery to their home address.

As Amazon has confirmed it has no plans to open further salons, rather than entering this sector, Amazon Salon seems to be a testing ground for new technologies. We could see Amazon making more technology available for third parties to purchase, as it does with its Just Walk Out technology. Amazon could also introduce some of this technology, such as the point-and-learn, within its own stores.
